Captain Murphey was reluctant to let Jimmie Trammell join up with the Rangers. But Jim wouldn't give up. After five days, he was still waiting for Cap to give him a chance when Carolina Krole arrived with an appeal for help. Her father had died in what she considered a suspicious mine accident and she had inherited the mine which her uncle was helping her manage. Now her uncle has disappeared and she fears there may have been foul play. Captain Murphey promises to send help as soon as someone is available. Just a routine job . . . that's what the Captain said when he gave young Jimmy Trammell his first Ranger assignment. "Find out who's looting the Tailholt mine, catch him and bring him in." But the town of Shafts was an armed camp, and within hours Jimmy had bleeding knuckles, a gun crease on his head and a knife wound in his back. Anything but routine, this assignment has Jim wondering if he really has what it takes to be a Ranger. Unsure whom he can trust, if anyone, Jim determines he will solve this case--or die trying. |
