The reissue of "The ballad of Baby Doe" commemorates the 40th anniversary of this legendary New York City Opera recording, which was recorded in June 1959, and the 70th birthday of Beverly Sills on May 25, 1999.--Cf. booklet, p. 9.
"The ballad of Baby Doe" was commissioned in honor of the Columbia University Bicentennial by the Koussevitsky Foundation of the Library of Congress and is dedicated to the memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky.

Booklet contains intro. by Beverly Sills, program notes (in part by the composer), synopsis, brief biographies of principal singers, "The real Baby Doe story", and libretto.
